From then on, they travel the ravaged land where there is almost nothing to eat and other people are dangerous either due to them being ill or savage or greedy. And then there are the angels. Honest-to-God (excuse the pun) angels. Fallen and otherwise. Upon finishing, I basically curled up in a ball and cried and let my heart explode with a million emotions. Goddamn this book is beautiful.

Demon Lords and Archdevils: The main antagonists of the story are Bel-Phegor, Ra'um and Baal'Zebuth, each Princes of Hell tasked by Lucifer to conquer the earth in his name. Stupid Evil: Some of the lesser demons the trio encounter fail to serve as competent arbiters of temptation because they make their evil natures too obvious. Of special note is the group of supposed crusaders who offer to let Thomas accompany them to Avignon at the cost of leaving his companions behind. The slightest amount of hesitation is enough to turn them hostile.

What makes this effect all the more potent is how immersed the reader becomes in the worldview and mindset of its medieval Christian characters. The Church is central to their life, and in many ways it is the demons’ primary target. I LOVE roadtrip stories and I LOVE plague novels. There is something cozy about the contrictive, almost claustrophobic vibe, the fear of absolutely everything, the ingenuity it usually takes the characters (making homes, leaving again, finding food and medicine etc), the realisation that no matter how devastating a catastrophy is happening to a person, what other humans do to them will be worse.

Okay, she asks the men to help her bury her father and during an interesting turn of events, the girl winds up alone with Thomas who she credits for saving her life and sparing her from being violated, but like I said, he is a disgraced knight and he is pretty broken down; his countenance and self-worth is very low. The dialogue between Thomas and the girl won me over immediately. It's funny, heartwarming, endearing...it is here, in the first few chapters, I fell head over heels in love with Thomas the Knight. He is now a forever favorite character who lives in my reader's heart. For me, this story is really about him.Soon three of the bandits are dead and not lamented, and the girl has decided that their killer, an excommunicated knight named Thomas de Givras, should accompany her on the next certain-death mission served up by her voices. Call to Agriculture: When everything is said and done, Thomas puts down his sword, refuses to take up any employment that would require one, and instead takes to the fields, which have long been short on workers due to the plague. He becomes a farmer from there on out. Papa Wolf: While he's initially blunt with her, Thomas does become more genuinely caring of Delphine, and in turn, becomes more fiercely protective of her as if she was his own daughter. Many people even mistake her for being his daughter, and he eventually just rolls with it as his cover story. By the end of the book, he adopts her as his daughter.
